One student continues his dreams at Jamestown College
Steve McQueen never imagined he would be where he is now, in Jamestown, N.D., working for Goodrich in a position that takes him all over the world. Originally from Calif., Steve's life has already been full of experiences, but he's still looking for more.
Steve had a chance to sit down with The Collegian and answer some questions about his current career, what he's learned and what he still wants to do.
Q. So what does your job entail?
A. I'm a product supply engineer for the local Goodrich branch. It involves a lot of travel all over the world to clients and figuring out how to solve their problems.
Q. How did you end up in that career?
A. I got my job based on previous experience with similar equipment.
Q. What are you doing here at Jamestown College?
A. I got my first degree in History and Political Science. I spent a couple of years in Ohio. I had some family this way and I was looking for a place with a college. This time around, I wanted to look for a degree that matched what I was doing in the business world.
Q. Do you like North Dakota?
A. I actually prefer North Dakota to California. There is a slower pace of life here and there are wide open spaces.
Q. What is the biggest change you've noticed in college since you earned your last degree?
A. There is a much bigger emphasis on technology.
Q. Do you see that as a good or bad thing?
A. I see it as a good thing. My job requires a lot of it and coming out of college the first time, I wasn't prepared. Now, I am constantly traveling. Being able to always communicate with my professors and classmates is a big plus.
Q. Your job takes you all over the world, where is the most interesting place you've ever been?
A. Dubai. There are two sets of rules: regular law and religious law, and you have to know both to navigate their society.
Q. How did that affect your life back in the states?
A. It made me more aware of the fact that the United States is not No. 1. All the travel has exposed me to many different cultures and I've communicated in so many different ways. In my career and my degree, it helps a lot.
Q. How many countries have you visited? Which one is your favorite?
A. I have been to between 12-15 countries. My favorite place to visit is Germany and I go there once or twice a country.
Q. Do you enjoy all of the travel?
A. I had no idea I would be traveling this much. I actually feel like I travel too much. I am on the road 60% of the time an in N.D. 40% of the time.
Q.What is your dream job?
A. Since I was younger, I've wanted to work in a museum. When I'm done with this career, I hope to volunteer in a museum.
